Throughout the ages we’ve seen Red reach celebrity status since his stint as the first game, many kids lived their first Poke-quest through him by catching Pokemon, obtaining Gym Badges challenging the Elite 4, and winning the Pokemon League.
And then we have Ash, who many kids watched as he went through the world of Pokemon, collecting all the badges, catching a few Pokemon and…..losing the Pokemon League..
Cut to years later and Red is considered a fan favorite, having achieve legendary status by Gen II, having the character Gold face him in the ultimate test in the game. He would go be seen in remakes and sequels, fueling his popularity, which cumulated in the much lauded Pokemon Origins special, which has him catching every single one of the original Pokemon and hot on Mew’s trail.
Cut to years later and Ash is still going from region to region, League to League, he’s lost every League he has participated in, has only caught handful amount of known Pokemon, and his skill and competence as a trainer is..lets say it’s inconsistent…..Sometimes he knows what he’s doing and other times he needs to have his hand held and tends to rely on luck.
But here’s the question. Is there any merit to comparing the two as characters, as trainers? Despite being in very different mediums and worlds that have their own set of rules? Well lets find out.
